It wasn't until recently that I became aware that there is a floating dump ground of primarily plastics not far off of the coast of Hawaii. This dumping ground is twice the size of the state of Texas!! Algalita Marine Research Foundation founded by Charles Moore has dedicated their efforts to studying the the ocean and were credited with the discovery of this dump ground over 10 years ago. It has to be an exhausting task to look at something so vast and know that it continues to grow on a daily basis. I'm not sure how I can impact the terrible mess we have created in the ocean but I can be a part of making sure that we utilize recycling programs in all areas to not add to the problem. The large majority of this dumping site is plastics made up of water bottles, wrappers, containers, etc that have made their way into our creeks, rivers and eventually ocean. It was a real wake up call for me and as much as I watch news shows I was amazed that I haven't heard anything about it. Shedding light on it may be a good starting point and awareness will hopefully lead to solutions.
